Amazon Basics Mid-Back Mesh Chair

Have you ever heard of an economy car? Typically speaking, it is a small car with no luxuries, designed to get you from point-A to point-B and not much else. The AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair is the office chair equivalent of an economy car. It is designed as something decently comfortable on which to sit, with minimal luxuries. If you need a place to sit, this chair will do its job. If you need a comfortable, ergonomic place to sit, you may want to sit somewhere else. The advantage of an economy car is that it does not cost nearly as much as a luxury car. Similarly, although this office chair provides minimal comfort it is available for a minimal cost.

Basic Style

The AmazonBasics Mesh Chair is not the prettiest chair on the market today. It is not bound to impress business clients and is not made to enhance the appeal of your office space. This chair is built for purpose, not style. It is available in only one color – basic black. It is constructed mostly of plastic, but its mesh back gives it a slightly higher-end feel than some of its similarly-priced competitors.

Minimal Adjustability

Some office chairs, usually those in the mid to high price ranges, allow you to adjust their seats, backs, and arm rests in multiple ways so that you may customize your chair to fit your body as well as possible. The Mid-Back Mesh Chair only allows you to adjust its seat. You cannot adjust the height or angle of its back. You cannot adjust the height or width of its arm rests. The seat can be adjusted in height and tilt, but cannot be slid forward or backward. The tilt function of this chair can also be adjusted in terms of tension. You can tighten the tension knob to hold the chair steady, or you can loosen it to rock back and forth.

So long as your body already fits the dimensions of this chair, being able to customize seat height is the only feature you will need. This way, you will be able to adjust it to fit most desks. Unfortunately, if your height or frame structure do not fit well with the seat or the position of its lumbar support, you may find yourself feeling quite uncomfortable in this chair.

Marginal Ergonomics

This chair’s lack of adjustability takes away from any ergonomic benefits many people may hope to find in it. Again, I will say, you may find yourself lucky. You may find that the length of your arms is perfect for the location of the arm rests. You may find that your height is well-suited to the stationary back rest. You may also find that your frame structure fits well within the width and depth of the chair’s seat. If you are not so lucky, you may find extra strain placed on your neck and trap muscles as a result of the arm rests sitting too high. If your body structure is too narrow, your legs are too short, or your lumbar spine sits too high or too low, you may experience extra pressure or strain on your lower back. If your body frame is too wide for this chair, you may feel squished in between its arm rests.

A definite plus for this chair is its lumbar support. Some of the lower-priced office chair options are beginning to feature some sort of lumbar support, but many still have flat back rests. The lumbar support on this chair is built into its frame. By pulling the mesh backing around the bent frame, the designers of this chair have ensured that the bottom portion of the chair will stick out just enough to offer some support to the S-shape of your spine. Unfortunately, the lumbar support on this particular chair appears to be aimed more toward the middle of the back than toward the bottom, which may cause problems for many users. Also, as has been stated, the back rest is not adjustable, which means that wherever the lumbar support falls on the curve of your back is the only place it will ever be.

A plus for this chair is that it is designed with a sloped front edge on its seat cushion. This is good, because it will reduce the pressure on the backs of your legs and prevent it from pulling on any nerves.

The Bottom Line

Overall, this is not a bad chair; it is simply not a very versatile chair. It appears to be made to fit a very specific body type and only that body type. The inability to adjust the arm rests and the back rest makes it very difficult to customize this chair for many body types, or even for different work activities. However, it appears to be built rather sturdily and is available at a fairly low price. If you happen to be one of the people whose body type fits well in this chair and you do not need something flashy or fancy for your office, this chair could be just right for you.
